NellaDerm Therapeutics is a precision dermatology company developing technologies to improve how chronic inflammatory skin diseases are understood, managed and treated. We combine advanced algorithms, precision topical formulations and next generation topical drug delivery research to move dermatology beyond a one size fits all approach.

Our initial focus is atopic dermatitis, a highly variable disease that affects individuals differently across age, biology, environment and disease state.

Our Story

NellaDerm was founded with a simple observation: people with the same diagnosis can respond very differently to the same treatment.

Atopic dermatitis is commonly managed through a process of treatment selection, observation and adjustment. Yet differences in biology, disease patterns, triggers, age, skin characteristics and treatment response can make this process highly individual.

NellaDerm was created to address this complexity.

We are building technology designed to identify meaningful individual patterns, guide treatment selection and learn from treatment response over time.

Our work brings together computational science, formulation science and advanced topical delivery research within a single precision dermatology strategy.

What began as a scientific effort to improve topical treatment has evolved into a broader vision for individualized disease management.

Sajjad JanfazaPhD

Founder and Chief Executive Officer

Dr. Sajjad Janfaza is a scientist and entrepreneur with expertise in nanobiotechnology, biomedical engineering and translational research.

His academic and research experience includes work at the University of British Columbia, Harvard Medical School, and leading Canadian biomedical research institutions.

He has contributed to more than 60 scientific publications and brings experience spanning nanotechnology, biomaterials, diagnostics and therapeutic development.

At NellaDerm, he leads company strategy, technology development, scientific partnerships and commercialization.

Hanieh RazaviMSc

Co Founder and Chief Scientific Officer

Hanieh Razavi has a background in nanomedicine, formulation development and translational science.

She leads formulation development and supports the translation of NellaDerm's scientific concepts into practical dermatology solutions.

Her work focuses on precision topical formulations, product development and the integration of formulation science with NellaDerm's broader technology strategy.

Shirmohammad Tavangari,M.Eng.

Chief Technology Officer, Computational Science

Shirmohammad Tavangari brings experience in machine learning, biomedical data analysis and computational modelling. He was previously affiliated with Harvard Medical School and Stanford.

His work supports the development of NellaDerm's advanced algorithms for individual pattern discovery, multimodal data analysis and treatment response modelling.

He contributes to the computational architecture underlying NellaDerm's precision dermatology technology.

Who We Are

NellaDerm began with a personal journey.

Like many families living with eczema, we experienced the cycle of uncertainty, trial and error, temporary relief, and recurring flare-ups. It made one problem clear: inflammatory skin conditions can look similar on the surface while being shaped by very different combinations of biology, history, triggers, environment, and treatment response.

That experience shaped everything we do.

We are scientists first.
Our team brings experience in nanobiotechnology, nanomedicine, biomedical engineering, formulation science, and advanced algorithms across leading Canadian and American research institutions.

We are building NellaDerm around a simple belief: individual biological variability should be at the center of how care is understood, designed, delivered, and refined.

Our work begins with a central scientific challenge: atopic dermatitis and other inflammatory skin conditions are heterogeneous. Each individual may have a different combination of biological drivers, symptoms, triggers, body sites, history, and response to care.

That is why our research connects multidimensional Pattern Discovery, formulation science, and advanced topical delivery—and why every part of the technology is being developed together.

What We’ve Built So Far

From research to real-world skin support

We have introduced two topical products, NovaNella and NellaCalm, informed by current scientific understanding of barrier care and irritation-prone skin.

They are designed to support the skin barrier, help soothe dryness and discomfort, and fit into consistent daily care.

These products are our first real-world foundation. They are not yet personalized and do not yet include the advanced delivery systems now under development.

They serve an important purpose:
bringing our science into practical use today while we continue building the next generation of NellaDerm technology.

What We’re Working On

MyEczema and Pattern Discovery

MyEczema.app is our free digital starting point. It helps individuals organize information such as symptoms, medical history, photos, triggers, stress, diet, environmental exposures, and treatment response. As the technology develops, this evolving care profile may also incorporate clinician notes, genetics, blood work, microbiome data, and other biological signals to support deeper Pattern Discovery—not simply a surface-level skin scan.

Our Technology

Advanced topical delivery

Alongside our digital and formulation work, we are developing adaptable topical delivery systems designed around the active ingredient, intended skin layer, disease mechanism, body site, population, release profile, and safety needs.

The objective is not simply maximum penetration. It is to support appropriate local delivery and retention, gradual release, formulation stability, and tolerability, with the aim of limiting unnecessary exposure.

Carrier characteristics may be adjusted to support flare, maintenance, or barrier-support needs. This advanced delivery work remains under development and is separate from our currently available products.

We are still early. Our available products and MyEczema.app form today’s foundation, while the integrated Pattern Discovery, formulation-library, and advanced-delivery technology continues through development and validation.
